Bhutan Red Cross Society strengthening disaster response preparedness at grassroots level

The Bhutan Red Cross Society’s coordinators in the districts will be equipped for all kinds of disasters and emergencies. The Bhutan Red Cross Society will be conducting a two-day Coordinators Capacity Building training in the capital beginning tomorrow. It will include hands-on training for disaster response preparedness at the community or grassroots level.

Discussions underway on reducing data charges  

The office of the Prime Minister says discussions are underway with the Government Technology Agency, GovTech to reduce data charges by 50 per cent. The government pledged to reduce the data charges to enable citizens to harness the full potential of ICT.

New culvert bridges bring year-round connectivity to Orong Gewog residents

Lives of the residents of Orong Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar have become more comfortable with better road connectivity. Gelephu Hospital sees drastic decline in immigration medical exams for Australian visas

The number of people availing Immigration Medical Examination or IME service for Australian visas has drastically dropped at the Gelephu Central Regional Referral Hospital. The hospital started providing the service to people applying for Australian visas in February, last year, to help reduce the pressure on the national referral hospital. The hospital says the decline could be because of the decreasing trend of people leaving for Australia.

Livelihood programme helping communities in WBH habitat explore alternative income source

A livelihood programme for communities living within the white-bellied heron landscape in the country has trained more than 50 individuals so far. The programme began this year. It raises awareness among the communities on the significance of the white-bellied heron. Moreover, people are trained in marketing and packaging local produce to acknowledge and compensate them for their efforts to conserve the critically endangered bird. The training for the second batch of representatives will end tomorrow at Paro.

Bhutanese wildlife biologist wins Whitley Award for his efforts to save Gee’s golden langur

Kuenzang Dorji, a wildlife biologist at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, has received the prestigious Whitley Award in London for safeguarding the endangered Gee’s golden langur and addressing human-wildlife conflict. He is among the seven conservationists selected from more than a hundred applications worldwide this year. The award, often referred to as ‘Green Oscars’ was presented yesterday with each winner receiving £ 50,000 to expand their conservation efforts globally. 

87 and going strong, Dengo relives his heydays

At 87 years old, age is just a number for Dengo from Paro, who participated as the oldest archer in the ongoing Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial National Archery Tournament. Not only is he the oldest participant, but his team also comprised of elderly men all above 60 years of age.
