Kawang Gewog awaits completion of double lane bridge at Pangrizampa

The delay in the construction of the double-lane reinforced concrete bridge at Pangrizampa in Thimphu has left residents of Kawang Gewog unhappy. Initially scheduled to be completed in November last year, the bridge was delayed because some local materials needed for the construction weren’t easily available. In addition, the width had to be increased to accommodate the double-lane design. The bridge is now nearing completion with 90 per cent of the work complete.

National referral hospital utilising device to detect antimicrobial resistance to H. Pylori

Antimicrobial resistance to Helicobacter pylori or H. Pylori can slow down the rate at which H. Pylori bacteria can be eradicated. Antimicrobial resistance is when bacteria develop resistance towards antibiotics, nullifying the effects of a drug. To detect H. Pylori drug resistance in the country, a device is being used at the national referral hospital. H. Pylori is a bacteria known to be a major risk factor for stomach cancer.

Asian women parliamentarian caucus focuses on gender equality and climate change

Women’s participation and representation in the political arena is still a challenge in most countries. In Bhutan, there are only five women in the Parliament, two of whom are eminent members in the National Council. To increase women's representation in politics, women parliamentarians from 12 countries gathered in the capital, today, for the Asian Women Parliamentarian Caucus. The Bhutanese government is hosting the meeting.

RIGSS launches mobile leadership programme

The Royal Institute of Governance and Strategic Studies, RIGSS, launched a mobile leadership programme in Nganglam, Pema Gatshel yesterday. The two-day training programme aims to develop essential leadership skills in public servants working in the districts.

Concerns mount over deteriorating condition of Wolakha to Talo highway

The residents and commuters using the 17-kilometre-long Wolakha to Talo highway in Punakha are calling for immediate improvement of the road. The road is filled with potholes, causing inconvenience for traffic to and from the Talo Goenpa. People of the gewog, tourists, and other locals use the road to visit the Talo Goenpa.

Vegetable cultivation helps Ja-Nyen-Ma’s farmers in Trashigang earn extra income

Venturing into vegetable cultivation has proven to be a means of earning some income besides paddy cultivation for farmers in Ja-Nyen-Ma village, Trashigang. They are earning a good income by selling the vegetables at nearby schools and Sunday markets. However, they are facing challenges as wild animals are damaging their crops.

Bhutanese wildlife biologist wins Whitley Award for his efforts to save Gee’s golden langur

Kuenzang Dorji, a wildlife biologist at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, has received the prestigious Whitley Award in London for safeguarding the endangered Gee’s golden langur and addressing human-wildlife conflict. He is among the seven conservationists selected from more than a hundred applications worldwide this year. The award, often referred to as ‘Green Oscars’ was presented yesterday with each winner receiving £ 50,000 to expand their conservation efforts globally. 

87 and going strong, Dengo relives his heydays

At 87 years old, age is just a number for Dengo from Paro, who participated as the oldest archer in the ongoing Jigme Dorji Wangchuck Memorial National Archery Tournament. Not only is he the oldest participant, but his team also comprised of elderly men all above 60 years of age.
