BNT 1 is the first national public television program in Bulgaria. It broadcasts current programs related to the public, films, series, Bulgarian and foreign productions, sports events from the Europa League, Winter sports, Euro 2016, as well as the meetings of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. The first broadcast of the Bulgarian Television was the live broadcast of the November 7th demonstration from the "9 September" square (today "Alexander Batemberg") in 1959. On December 26, 1959, the official opening of the Bulgarian Television took place. In 1964, the Main Directorate "Bulgarian Radio and Television" was established under the Committee for Culture and Art. In 1971, radio and television in Bulgaria were separated into a Committee for Television and Radio, part of the structure of the executive power. Since 1974, the Second Television Program began its activity. Over the years, this TV channel has given preference to cultural programs and original shows. Since 1977, Bulgarian Television and Bulgarian Radio acquired the status of independent legal entities under the Committee for Science, Art and Culture. In 1986, the two media were again united in the Committee for Television and Radio under the Council of Ministers.
