TVNZ 1 is the first national television channel owned and operated by the New Zealand state television broadcaster (TVNZ). It was the first major television broadcaster in New Zealand since 1960. As an independent government managing facilities at four major centers in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and eventually began sharing programs with all of them in 1969, becoming NZBC TV (although individual facilities retained their call signs in the 1970s).
